Second youngest winner ever in China
The Chinese grand prix became a race between four cars, the two Mercedes and the two Ferraris. Kimi Antonelli started from pole position, as the youngest driver in pole position ever, but it was the Ferrari veteran that started from p3, Lewis Hamilton, the got the best start and quickly took the lead. Antonelli fought back and overtook Hamilton at the end of the second lap, and held on to the lead for the rest of the race, including after his only pitstop of the race.
Behind Antonelli, there was a close fight between saturdays sprint winner, George Russel and Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, all cars overtaking each other several times.
Some other teams had some harder time, foremost McLaren, having both cars retired before the race even started. For Oscar Piastri, this was the second time out of two races this season that his race ended before it started, when he crashed out in Australia last week. This weekend Piastri got out on the formation lap while the mechanics were working on Lando Norris’ car, but then called Piastri in from the formation lap.
Two other cars didn’t get to start either, the Audi of Gabriel Bortoleto and Alexander Albon for Williams. Albon faced a mechanical failure, and Bortoleto had a technical issue. Another team facing issues at the start of this season is Aston Martin, that on beforehand said that they didn’t have a car that could compete all the laps of an F1 race had to retire both cars in both Australia, but also in China.
